Hay Forks & Wooden Rakes

My pitch forks are closely based upon antique pitch forks in Old Salem’s collection. They are heavy-duty tools meant for hard use.

Handles for both rakes and hay forks are riven (split) from a fresh oak log 65 to 70 inches long. Drawknife and shaving horse are used to rough-out the handle, which is then finished with a spokeshave to leave a smooth surface. Rake tines are individually handmade from riven oak for strength. Pitch forks have 3 to 6 tines and rakes typically have heads 30″ wide.

Antique Hay Fork at Old Salem

“I have been putting the 2 hay rakes to work. Lots of raking!  They are making the raking aspect of hand cut hay much easier.”
